It’s not just going to be a new school year for our youngest Sierra Vista scholars — it’s going to be a new school as they will be the first to attend Alvin Independent School District’s newest elementary — ‘Bel Nafegar Sanchez Elementary.
And what’s even more exciting is parents will no longer have to cross Highway 288 to take their kiddos to school because ‘Bel Nafegar Sanchez Elementary is located only about a mile away in our sister community Sterling Lakes.
The new school sits on 15 acres at 1721 Sterling Lakes West Drive. The $17.5 million campus has a total of 101,858 square feet that will offer instructional spaces, common areas, a spacious library, cafetorium and more for up to 800 students.
The Navigators are being led by Principal Rosemary Reed, who has been an Alvin ISD administrator since 2006.
The school is named for a true pioneer, ‘Bel Sanchez, who just last year was named a 2018 Hispanic Hero by Comcast Houston for her contributions to the community. Now a regent of Alvin Community College, Ms. Sanchez was an educator at Alvin ISD for 30 years, serving as the district’s first director of bilingual and ESL programs. She also was honored as the City of Alvin’s 2013 Citizen of the Year.
